The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum in Katsuyama is one of the great dinosaur museums of the world, ranked routinely alongside the best in North America and China, and it stands beside the quarry that made Fukui the dinosaur capital of Japan. Inside its vast silver dome, dozens of skeletons rear over the exhibition floor, including species dug from the surrounding hills that bear the prefecture’s name, such as Fukuiraptor and Fukuisaurus.

Inside the dome

A long escalator drops you into the earth to begin among fossils and animatronic beasts before the main hall opens up, ringed by full mounts, dioramas and laboratories where visitors watch real preparation work on new finds. The science is current and seriously presented, with strong English signage, yet the staging keeps children spellbound. Field station experiences at the nearby excavation site let visitors try fossil hunting in season.

Worth the journey

Katsuyama is not on the way to anywhere, and the museum is emphatically worth the detour, a genuine national treasure of a collection. Allow at least half a day including travel from Fukui city, and book timed entry ahead in holiday periods, when Japanese families arrive in force.

Getting there

From Fukui Station, now on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, ride the Echizen Railway Katsuyama Eiheiji Line to its terminus at Katsuyama, about 55 minutes, then a community bus or taxi for the final ten minutes to the museum. Drivers from Kanazawa or Fukui follow the Chubu Jukan expressway toward Katsuyama.
