Nasu Safari Park puts you nose to nose with lions, white tigers and roaming herds of herbivores in the highland resort country of northern Tochigi. You tour the enclosures from inside a vehicle, your own car, a rental at the gate or the park’s wire windowed Wild Ride bus, and it is the bus, with animals reaching for feed at the mesh, that delivers the encounters people talk about for years.

The safari circuit

The course rolls past zebra, giraffe and camel country where animals amble around the traffic, then into the carnivore zones behind their double gates. White tigers are the park’s emblem and reliably its most dramatic residents. Feeding from the Wild Ride bus turns the herbivore sections into delightful chaos, with ostriches and bison jostling at the windows. A walking zone near the entrance adds smaller animals for children who need to pat something before leaving.

Nasu as a destination

The park sits within the Nasu highlands resort area, long favoured for summer retreats, with outlet shopping, onsen towns and the Nasudake ropeway nearby. It combines naturally with an overnight in a highland hotel, especially in autumn when the hills colour.

Getting there

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nasushiobara, about 75 minutes, then a bus or taxi for the 30 to 40 minute run up into the highlands. Drivers exit the Tohoku Expressway at Nasu and follow the resort roads.

Frequently asked questions

Can you feed the animals? Yes, from designated vehicles with feed sold on board.

Will animals damage my car? Curious herbivores can leave slobber and the odd scratch, which is why many visitors choose the bus or rental options.
