Shima Spain Village, or Parque Espana, recreates a corner of Iberia on the green Shima Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, complete with whitewashed plazas, tiled courtyards, flamenco stages and a cast of cheerful mascots. Long a beloved oddity of Japanese theme park culture, it found a new generation of fans in recent years and rewards visitors with short queues, sincere theming and a genuinely good coaster lineup.

Rides and shows

The Pyrenees inverted coaster is the headliner, a serious machine by any park’s standards, supported by family coasters, dark rides through Don Quixote’s adventures and gentle attractions for small children. Daily parades and flamenco performances, danced by professionals, give the park its rhythm, and the churros and Spanish influenced menus are taken surprisingly seriously.

Making the trip work

Shima is a resort region of oyster rafts, coves and the sacred sites of nearby Ise, so most visitors fold the park into a wider Ise-Shima itinerary with an onsen stay. The park rarely feels crowded outside holidays, which transforms the theme park experience if your only reference is Universal or Disney.

Getting there

Take the Kintetsu line to Ugata Station, reached by limited express from Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya in two to two and a half hours, then a direct bus to the park in about 15 minutes. The scenic Shimakaze premium express makes the journey part of the holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth the journey from the big cities? As part of an Ise-Shima trip, absolutely; as a standalone day from Osaka it is a long haul.

Are queues really short? Outside peak holidays, walk on rides are common.
