The Museum Matsushima in Miyagi

Getting there

From Sendai, take the JR Senseki Line to Matsushima Kaigan Station, about 40 minutes on local trains. The sightseeing district spreads along the waterfront within walking distance of the station, and everything in town, museum included, is close together. Note that Matsushima Kaigan is the stop you want for the bay, not Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Line, which leaves you a longer walk.

While you are in Matsushima

Pair the museum with Zuiganji, the area’s great Zen temple, and the small Godaido hall perched on its islet by the pier. Bay cruises loop among the islands year round, and in the cooler months Matsushima’s oysters are reason enough for the trip on their own, served grilled, fried and every other way along the main street.
