Are You Eligible For The Japan Rail Pass?

Wondering whether you can actually buy and use a Japan Rail Pass? The rules are simpler than they look, but they trip up a surprising number of travellers every year, so here is the 2026 state of play.

Who qualifies

The Japan Rail Pass is for overseas visitors entering Japan as a Temporary Visitor, the standard tourist status given to Australians on arrival for stays of up to 90 days. If your passport gets the Temporary Visitor status at immigration, you are eligible. It is that straightforward for the vast majority of our customers.

The passport stamp matters

Here is the catch that catches people: when you exchange your voucher for the pass in Japan, JR staff need to sight the Temporary Visitor endorsement in your passport. If you breeze through one of the automated smart gates at the airport, you may not receive a physical stamp, so make a point of asking a staff member at immigration to stamp your passport. No stamp can mean no pass, and that is a rotten way to start a holiday.

Working, studying or living in Japan?

If you enter on a working visa, working holiday, student visa or as a resident, you are not eligible for the nationwide Japan Rail Pass. Many regional passes have looser rules though, so residents can often still take advantage of those for weekend trips.

Japanese nationals

Since June 2017 the rules for Japanese passport holders have been tight: you qualify only if you can show permanent residency of ten years or more in a country outside Japan. Documentation requirements are strict, so check them carefully before buying.

Children

Kids aged 6 to 11 travel on a child pass at roughly half the adult price, and children under 6 travel free without a seat reservation of their own. The same Temporary Visitor rules apply to the whole family.
