Validation Period:

The time validity period of the JR Rail Pass is based on calendar days, from midnight to midnight. Say you start using your JR Rail Pass at 6.30pm on day 1, it will expire on day 7 at midnight.

Third-sector lines added with the Hokuriku extension

When the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended in March 2024, several sections of former JR track passed to third-sector operators. The pass still covers specific stretches of these so you are not stranded mid-route, but only as pass-through segments, and you cannot break your journey at intermediate stations on them.

IR Ishikawa Railway, Kanazawa to Tsubata only
Ainokaze Toyama Railway, Toyama to Takaoka only
Hapi-Line Fukui, Echizen-Hanandō to Fukui only

Outside those segments these are private railways and normal fares apply.
