No Japanese baseball crowd is quite like Hiroshima’s. The Carp are the city’s civic religion, community owned in spirit and followed with a devotion that turns their home ground into a sea of red on game nights. Catching a match at their modern open air stadium near Hiroshima Station is as memorable a local experience as anything else in the city.

The Carp experience

The stadium was built with fans in mind, offering everything from standard seats to lawn areas, barbecue terraces and party decks. The crowd sings personalised chants for every batter, launches into the famous balloon release during the seventh inning stretch at applicable games, and sustains a wall of choreographed noise from first pitch to last. Squid, oysters and Hiroshima style snacks feature heavily among the food stalls, a cut above standard stadium fare.

Tickets and timing

Carp games sell out more often than most teams in the league because the stadium is modest in size and the fan base is enormous, so book as early as you can, particularly for weekend games and any match against the Hanshin Tigers or Yomiuri Giants. The season runs from late March to October, with night games the norm in the humid summer months.

Getting there

The ballpark is roughly a ten minute signposted walk from the south side of Hiroshima Station along a dedicated pedestrian route that fills with red shirts on match days. Since the station is the city’s shinkansen hub, you can arrive from Osaka or Fukuoka and walk straight to the game.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to understand baseball? No, the crowd is the show. Rules knowledge just adds a layer.

Is the stadium covered? It is open air with some covered sections, so check the forecast in the rainy season.
