High on Mount Hiei, the sacred mountain northeast of Kyoto, someone had the happy idea of planting a French garden and filling it with the impressionists. Garden Museum Hiei sets ceramic reproductions of paintings by Monet, Renoir and their contemporaries among beds of the very flowers the artists painted, so you drift between a canvas of water lilies and an actual pond of them, with Lake Biwa glittering far below.

Strolling the gardens

The site rambles across the summit area in a series of themed gardens, rose walks and viewpoints, with the artworks reproduced on weatherproof porcelain panels placed where they make the most sense. Being at altitude, the air runs noticeably cooler than the city, which makes this a favourite Kyoto escape at the height of summer, and the cafe terrace has views that stretch across the lake on one side and toward Kyoto on the other. Bloom follows the seasons, so expect a different garden in June than in October.

Getting there

The scenic approach is from Demachiyanagi Station in Kyoto: ride the Eizan Railway to Yase Hieizanguchi, then take the cable car and ropeway up the mountain, an ascent that is an attraction in itself. Direct buses from central Kyoto also climb to the summit area in season. The gardens close for the snowy months, so check operating dates if you are travelling between late autumn and spring, and consider combining the visit with Enryakuji, the great temple complex spread across the same mountain.
