The former Nara Prison is one of Meiji era Japan’s great red brick landmarks, a radial fortress of a building completed in 1908 and used as a prison for over a century. Now in the care of Hoshino Resorts, its museum opens the gates to a structure that very few people ever saw from the inside, for obvious reasons.

Inside the red brick radial

The prison was built to a classic radial plan, five wings of cells fanning out from a central observation hall, and walking that hall today is the visit’s defining moment: corridors of brick and iron stretching away in every direction. Exhibits cover the building’s architecture, the history of Japan’s modern penal system and the daily lives of inmates and guards, told with restraint rather than theatrics. The craftsmanship is the quiet star; the brickwork was laid to a standard that let the building serve for more than a hundred years.

A different side of Nara

Most visitors know Nara for deer and great temples, and the prison, standing in the quiet north of the city near the old Hannyaji temple district, adds a completely different century to the story. It suits travellers on a second Nara visit or anyone drawn to industrial and architectural heritage.

Getting there

From Kintetsu Nara or JR Nara stations, city buses and taxis reach the site in around ten to fifteen minutes. Nara itself is under an hour from both Kyoto and Osaka by rail, making this an easy add to a standard Nara day.
