Kids Plaza Osaka is one of those attractions that quietly saves a family holiday. It is a large, cheerful children’s museum in the north of the city where everything is designed to be touched, climbed, poured, pushed and experimented with, and it absorbs energetic kids for hours regardless of the weather outside.

Inside the plaza

The centrepiece is a multi storey climbing structure of walkways, bridges and slides that children disappear into the moment they arrive. Around it are floors of hands on exhibits covering science, culture and everyday life, including water play, a small town for role play, and craft and workshop spaces run through the day. Most signage matters little because everything is intuitive, and staff keep the busier areas moving safely.

Weekday mornings are the quietest time, while weekends and school holidays get lively. The water and craft areas can leave clothes damp or painted, so a spare shirt for little ones is not a silly idea. Combined with nearby Tenjinbashisuji, one of the longest shopping streets in Japan, it makes a satisfying low cost day in a part of Osaka most tourists skip.

Getting there

The plaza is right by Ogimachi Station on the Sakaisuji Line of the Osaka Metro, one stop from Minami-morimachi, and about a ten minute walk from JR Temma Station on the Osaka Loop Line. From Umeda it is only a few minutes by subway with one easy change.
