NIFREL Osaka Tickets

NIFREL calls itself a living museum, and the label fits. Created by the team behind the famous Kaiyukan aquarium, it blends aquarium, zoo and art gallery into a series of beautifully lit spaces at Expo City in northern Osaka, where the point is not size but closeness: to colours, to shapes, to animals you can very nearly touch.

A different kind of animal experience

Each zone is built around a theme rather than a habitat, with small tanks presented like artworks, a mesmerising room of light installations, and open areas where birds and animals roam with remarkably little between you and them. White tigers and pygmy hippos draw the crowds, while capybaras and waterfowl wander the open zone at their own pace. It is compact, curated and unlike any conventional aquarium in Japan, which makes it especially good for visitors who have seen plenty of them.

Around Expo City

NIFREL anchors the Expo City complex, which also offers a giant ferris wheel, shopping and dining, all beside the Expo 70 Commemorative Park and its famous Tower of the Sun. Together they fill a comfortable half day or more, and the park’s gardens are lovely in cherry blossom and autumn seasons.

Getting there

Take the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line north to Senri-Chuo, transfer to the Osaka Monorail and alight at Banpaku-kinen-koen Station, from which NIFREL is a short signposted walk. The trip from Umeda takes around half an hour.
