The Sakishima Cosmo Tower Observatory crowns Osaka’s bayside government tower with a 360 degree viewing floor 252 metres up, and it owns a perspective the city’s more famous decks cannot: the whole harbour at your feet, the skyline inland, and sunsets that drop straight into the Seto Inland Sea. Among Osaka’s high places it is the quiet one, rarely crowded and priced gently.

The view

An express lift and a final escalator ride deliver you to the top floor lounge, where floor to ceiling glass wraps the building. West, the bay spreads through container terminals and bridges toward Kobe and Awaji Island; east, the city grid runs to the mountains, with the skyscrapers of Umeda and the Ikoma range behind. Dusk is the hour to come, as the port lights come up and planes descend toward Kansai Airport across the water. Cafe seating and couples’ benches face the best aspects.

Worth knowing

The tower anchors the redeveloped Sakishima district near the Expo legacy areas, and combines naturally with the Kaiyukan aquarium precinct across the water via the Chuo Line. Weekday evenings can feel almost private, which has made the deck a local secret for proposals.

Getting there

Take the Chuo Line to Cosmosquare and transfer to the New Tram for one stop to Trade Center-mae, which connects to the tower complex; from Namba or Umeda allow around 30 minutes. Follow signs through the ATC building to the observatory entrance.
