TEMPOZAN Giant Ferris Wheel

The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel turns slowly above Osaka’s bayfront, right beside the Kaiyukan aquarium, and for a few years after opening in 1997 it was the tallest wheel in the world. A full rotation takes about 15 minutes and lifts you more than 100 metres over the harbour, with views across the port cranes, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge on clear days, and the city skyline stretching inland.

Riding the wheel

Cabins are enclosed and air conditioned, seating up to eight, so the ride is comfortable in any season. A limited number of see through cabins with transparent floors run alongside the standard ones, and the queue for them moves separately, worth the wait if heights thrill rather than terrify you. After dark the wheel becomes a landmark in itself, its LED display doubling as a giant weather forecast visible across the bay.

Around Tempozan

The wheel anchors the Tempozan Harbor Village precinct, so it slots easily into a bay day. Kaiyukan, one of the world’s great aquariums, is next door, the Tempozan Marketplace mall handles food, and sightseeing cruises leave from the adjacent piers. Sunset rides are the sweet spot, catching the harbour in colour and the city lighting up.

Getting there

Take the Chuo subway line to Osakako Station, then walk about five minutes toward the waterfront. From Namba, change to the Chuo Line at Hommachi, roughly 20 minutes all up. The wheel is unmissable once you exit the station.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ride? One rotation of about 15 minutes.

Is it scary? Not especially. The cabins are fully enclosed and the motion is very gentle, though the clear floor cabins add spice.
