Doraemon, the earless blue robot cat, is arguably Japan’s most beloved character, and his creator Fujiko F Fujio grew up in Takaoka on the Toyama coast. The Hometown Art Gallery honours that connection with original artwork and exhibits tracing how a boy from this casting town became one of manga’s gentlest geniuses.

Inside the gallery

Displays move through reproductions and original art from Doraemon and the artist’s wider universe of kind hearted science fiction, alongside personal effects, early drawings and the story of his Takaoka childhood, including the school days friendship with his lifelong creative partner. It is a compact, affectionate museum pitched at fans of all ages, and the photo spots with Doraemon draw as many adults as children. English speakers manage easily; the drawings do the talking.

Doraemon around Takaoka

The city embraces its famous son: a Doraemon themed tram runs on the local Manyosen line and character statues dot the streets between sights. Takaoka’s own attractions, the great Zen temple of Zuiryuji and its national treasure buildings, plus a long tradition of metal casting, round out an easy day.

Getting there

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Shin-Takaoka, or the Ainokaze Toyama Railway to Takaoka Station from Toyama or Kanazawa, each around twenty minutes away. The gallery is reachable from the station area by local transport or a modest walk; follow the Doraemon markers.
