Doraemon, the earless robot cat from the 22nd century, has been Japan’s best loved manga character for over half a century, and this touring exhibition celebrates him at full volume. 100% Doraemon & Friends fills its venue with large scale figures of Doraemon and the whole gang, arranged in playful crowds and photogenic set pieces that treat the character as pop art as much as children’s entertainment.
The show is built around massed ranks of character figures, from palm sized to well over life size, alongside artwork drawn from decades of the manga. The effect is somewhere between a sculpture park and a fan festival, and it photographs wonderfully, which is very much the intent. Original goods produced for the exhibition sell fast at the shop, and limited items regularly sell out early in a run.
Longtime fans will get the references layered through the displays, but the exhibition works for anyone who enjoys bold, cheerful pop culture spectacle. Children love spotting favourite characters at strange scales. Allow around an hour, more if you queue for the popular photo spots. Timed entry tickets keep crowds manageable, and weekday visits are noticeably calmer.
Venues for touring exhibitions change between runs, so check the location printed on your ticket and the official notices before you travel. Exhibition sites in Tokyo are generally close to major JR or subway stations, and your booking confirmation will name the nearest one.
Is it suitable for adults without children? Absolutely. Much of the audience is adult fans and photographers.
Can you take photos? Photography is allowed in most areas, which is half the fun.
