Asakusa Hanayashiki Tickets

Hanayashiki opened in 1853, which makes it Japan’s oldest amusement park, and it has been squeezed into the same few blocks behind Senso-ji temple ever since. It is tiny, charmingly creaky and completely unlike the mega parks on Tokyo Bay. Coming here is less about thrill rides and more about stepping into a piece of working Showa nostalgia in the middle of Asakusa.

The star attraction is the Roller Coaster, capital letters intended, which has been running since 1953 and rattles past apartment windows close enough to wave at residents. Around it cluster a haunted house, a small drop tower with views over the temple rooftops, carousel style classics and game corners. Nothing here is extreme, and that is the point. Queues are short, rides are quick and the whole park can be covered in a couple of hours.

Because the park sits two minutes from Senso-ji, it folds naturally into the classic Asakusa circuit of Nakamise shopping street, the temple and the surrounding old town lanes. Families use it to break up a temple heavy day, while couples come in the evening for the retro atmosphere. Getting there

Asakusa Station is served by the Ginza subway line, the Asakusa subway line and the Tobu Skytree Line. From any of them, walk through the temple grounds toward the west side; Hanayashiki is just beyond the main hall, about seven minutes from the station.
