How to Travel from Tokyo to Fukuoka

Fukuoka, Kyushu's biggest city, is over 1,000 km from Tokyo, and this is the one major route where flying often beats the train: about 2 hours Haneda to Fukuoka Airport, which sits just two subway stops from the city centre. The Nozomi shinkansen does it in about 5 hours (from around ¥22,220), and it's the JR Pass holders' choice. Here's exactly how each option works, what it costs, and which to choose.

Direct Nozomi trains run the full Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen route from Tokyo to Hakata Station (Fukuoka's shinkansen terminal) roughly every 15 to 30 minutes:

• Nozomi: about 5 hours direct. Not covered by the standard Japan Rail Pass (you can pay a supplement to ride it on the pass).
• Hikari + Sakura: with a JR Pass, ride a Hikari to Shin-Osaka and change to a Sakura for Hakata; about 6 hours all up and fully covered.
• Kodama: forget it on a route this long.

Hakata Station is right in the city: Tenjin, the yatai food stalls and Canal City are minutes away by subway. That central arrival is the train's big advantage, along with skipping airport security and luggage limits.

Do you need to reserve a seat?

On a 5 to 6 hour ride, yes, reserve (it's free with the JR Pass). Do so especially at rush hour and in peak seasons (New Year, Golden Week in early May, mid-August Obon). Green Car seats are worth considering for the extra room on this route.

First and last trains

The first direct Nozomi leaves Tokyo around 06:00 (arriving Hakata around 11:00) and the last around 18:50. JR Pass itineraries via Shin-Osaka should set off by mid-afternoon to make the last Sakura connection.

Travelling with a Japan Rail Pass

If you're making several long journeys, a Japan Rail Pass can save money, but it was repriced in late 2023, so check today's price against your trips first. For this route the pass covers the Hikari, Sakura and Kodama (not the Nozomi or Mizuho without a supplement). Tokyo to Fukuoka by plane

The flight is about 2 hours, and Fukuoka Airport is uniquely convenient: just 2 subway stops (about 6 minutes) from Hakata Station. Door to door from central Tokyo you're looking at about 4 hours. With low-cost carriers (ANA, JAL, Peach, Skymark and Jetstar all fly it) fares from around ¥7,000 are common if you book ahead, which is why most travellers without a JR Pass fly this route.

Tokyo to Fukuoka by bus

Overnight buses exist (around 14 hours or more, from roughly ¥10,000) but on a distance like this they're an endurance event. Only worth it if every yen counts; check Japan Bus Online if you're determined.

Driving from Tokyo to Fukuoka

Around 12 to 14 hours of expressway driving plus very substantial tolls and fuel. Nobody should do this as a way to get there; only consider it as a multi-day touring holiday in itself.

Luggage on the shinkansen

Bags up to 160 cm combined fit overhead. Oversized baggage (160 to 250 cm) needs a free advance seat reservation. Or use Japan's takkyubin delivery service to send suitcases ahead to your Fukuoka hotel, especially sensible if you're stopping over en route.

So what is the best way to get from Tokyo to Fukuoka?

No JR Pass? Fly: it's faster and usually far cheaper, and Fukuoka's airport is practically downtown. With a JR Pass, the Hikari + Sakura combination is a comfortable 6 hours, and stopovers in Osaka, Himeji or Hiroshima cost nothing extra.
