Kyoto is an easy day trip from Osaka, and many visitors base themselves in Osaka for the food and nightlife and go to Kyoto for the temples. The quickest route depends less on the train than on where in Kyoto you are going first, because Kyoto Station is south of the main sights.
Check live fares & book →From Osaka Station, the JR Special Rapid reaches Kyoto Station in about 28 minutes, every 10 to 15 minutes, for ¥580. It is the easy choice for a day trip and is covered by a Japan Rail Pass.
If your first stop is Gion, Arashiyama or Fushimi Inari rather than Kyoto Station, the Hankyu or Keihan lines can drop you closer, although they are not covered by a rail pass.

Change at Katsura for Hankyu Arashiyama. With a rail pass, go to Kyoto Station and take the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama instead.
The big sights fill up by mid morning. A train around 7.30am to 8am gets you to Fushimi Inari or Arashiyama before the tour groups.
