Kyoto and Osaka are about 40 km apart and the trains between them run so often you rarely need a timetable. The real choice is where you want to arrive. The JR Special Rapid drops you at Osaka Station in Umeda, the Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka, and the private Hankyu and Keihan lines start from central Kyoto rather than Kyoto Station, which suits you if you are staying near Gion.
Check live fares & book →The best train from Kyoto to Osaka is usually not the bullet train. The JR Special Rapid runs from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station in about 28 minutes, every 10 to 15 minutes, for ¥580.
The Shinkansen takes 13 to 17 minutes but stops at Shin-Osaka, north of the centre, so once you change trains it saves very little. Both are covered by a Japan Rail Pass, except the Nozomi, which needs a supplement.
One-way fares by seat class. Return simply doubles the fare.

Shin-Osaka is handy if you are catching another bullet train onwards. For the city itself, the Special Rapid into Osaka Station is just as quick once you count the change, and much cheaper if you are not on a pass.
Hankyu leaves from Kyoto-Kawaramachi and Keihan from Gion-Shijo, both in central Kyoto. It saves the trip across town to Kyoto Station, although neither line is covered by a rail pass.
Suica, Pasmo and ICOCA all work on the JR, Hankyu and Keihan lines, so you can simply tap through the gate without buying a ticket.
The Special Rapid is a commuter train and fills up on weekday mornings. With large suitcases, travel after about 9.30am or take the reserved Shinkansen.
