Miyajima Aquarium, known as Miyajimarine, hides a few minutes behind the great torii and Itsukushima Shrine, and it gives the sacred island a gentler second act. Built in traditional style to sit quietly among the temple town streets, it focuses on the creatures of the Seto Inland Sea, with one resident found in barely any other aquarium: the finless porpoise, the smiling grey sunameri that has lived in these waters for centuries.

Small sea, big characters

The sunameri are the stars, curious and playful at the glass, and the aquarium’s emphasis on the Inland Sea continues through oyster raft displays explaining Hiroshima’s most famous industry, local fish and tidal flat creatures. Sea lion performances and penguin and otter encounters round out a schedule pitched at families, and the whole visit runs a comfortable ninety minutes, indoors and blessedly cool after the island’s sunny approaches.

Folding it into a Miyajima day

Most visitors give Miyajima the shrine, the torii at both tides and Mt. Misen, and the aquarium is the ideal variation for those with children, or a second visit’s discovery. It also serves as the island’s best wet weather refuge when the forecast betrays you.

Getting there

Take the JR Sanyo Line or Hiroden tram to Miyajimaguchi, cross on the ten minute ferry, then walk about twenty five minutes through the shrine district, or catch the local shuttle. The stroll passes Itsukushima Shrine, so the route is the sightseeing.
