Shinshoji, in the hills outside Fukuyama, is a Zen temple complex that treats the visitor experience as seriously as the doctrine: gardens, historic teahouses, contemporary architecture and a remarkable art pavilion spread across a wooded estate where the point is to slow down until you notice things.

Zen for the senses

The grounds walk you past raked gravel gardens, a bathhouse, lotus ponds and teahouses relocated from centuries past, toward the collection of Zen painting and calligraphy including works in the tradition of the great master Hakuin. The modern signature is the KOHTEI pavilion, a ship like sculpture clad in timber shingles that appears to float above its stone sea; inside, a darkened artwork resets your senses completely. Udon made to a temple recipe is served in the grounds, and matcha in the teahouses extends the mood.

Taking it slowly

Allow half a day rather than an hour; the estate is large, the paths are part of the practice, and rushing defeats the design. Zazen meditation and other experiences run on certain schedules, listed with current details on the booking page.

Getting there

Fukuyama is a Sanyo Shinkansen stop around twenty five minutes from Okayama and under an hour from Hiroshima; from Fukuyama Station the temple is a twenty minute taxi or a bus and walk into the hills. Pairing it with the temple town of Onomichi or Tomonoura’s port makes a strong regional day.
