The Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens climb the slopes directly behind Shin-Kobe Station, reached by a ropeway that lifts you over the Nunobiki Falls to terraced gardens, glasshouses and one of the best free-with-entry views in Kansai, the whole city and bay spread below.

How to do it

Ride the ropeway to the top station, work downhill through the gardens and cafés, and either ride back from the mid station or, with knees willing, walk the falls trail down to Shin-Kobe. Sunset into the night view is the classic finish, with evening hours in the warm months.

Getting there

The ropeway base is five minutes from Shin-Kobe Station, which is the Shinkansen stop, making this the easiest bullet-train-to-view transfer in Japan. From Sannomiya it is one subway stop.

Frequently asked questions

How long? Two to three hours with the walk down.

Best season? Genuinely year-round: roses early summer, night views in August, autumn colour late.
