On Awaji Island, between Kobe and Shikoku, the Nijigen no Mori anime park has turned a hillside of real forest into the world of Naruto and Boruto. This is not a museum of displays behind glass. It is a physical challenge course where you run, climb, crawl and puzzle your way through ninja training grounds modelled on the Hidden Leaf Village, with life sized recreations that stop fans in their tracks.

Training like a shinobi

The main attraction sets you loose on athletic courses and a scroll hunt through the woods, solving riddles and collecting stamps as you go, with plenty of photo moments at recreations of iconic scenes and statues of the series’ heroes. The courses involve genuine physical activity across uneven terrain, so wear proper shoes and clothes you can move in. Themed food and exclusive merchandise wait at the end, as they should.

Is it fans only?

Devotees of the series get the most from the details, but the obstacle courses stand on their own as outdoor fun, and plenty of families visit with only a passing knowledge of Naruto. The wider Nijigen no Mori park contains separate attractions themed to other franchises, each ticketed on its own, so check what your ticket includes before planning the day.

Getting there

Awaji Island has no train line, so the usual route is a highway bus from Kobe Sannomiya or Maiko across the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge to the island, with stops serving the park area. Drivers will find the park just off the expressway near the northern end of the island, an easy day trip from Kobe or Osaka.
