Sumaura Sanjo Yuen is Kobe’s most endearing time capsule, a small mountaintop park above Suma beach reached by a vintage ropeway and then, gloriously, by the Carlator, a rattling escalator styled contraption officially described as the least comfortable ride in Japan. Locals adore it precisely for that, and the reward at the top is a sweeping panorama where Osaka Bay meets the Seto Inland Sea.

The journey is the attraction

The ropeway climbs from the shoreline in a few scenic minutes, handing you to the Carlator for the final pitch, an experience to grin through rather than review. On the summit ridge, a revolving lounge turns slowly behind glass, old fashioned game corners and a small chairlift potter along, and lookouts frame the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge to the west and the bay traffic below. Everything is modest, retro and beautifully kept.

Suma and around

Down at sea level, Suma beach is Kobe’s summer playground, and the aquarium precinct nearby has been redeveloped into a modern attraction. Historically minded walkers can trace Genpei war sites in the surrounding hills, where one of Japan’s most storied battles unfolded in 1184.

Getting there

The ropeway base is beside Sumaura-Koen Station on the Sanyo Electric Railway, reached from Kobe Sannomiya by direct Hanshin and Sanyo through services in around 25 minutes. JR Suma Station is one stop and a short walk away on the JR Kobe Line.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is the Carlator? A 1966 vintage ride up the slope on wheeled platforms, famous for its bone rattle; it is part of the fun.

Is it worth it for the view alone? On a clear day, absolutely, and sunsets over the strait are special.
