Uzumasa is Kyoto’s Hollywood. Film studios have shot samurai dramas in this western pocket of the city for a century, and Uzumasa Kyoto Village lets visitors walk straight onto the kind of Edo period streetscape those productions made famous. Wooden facades, lantern lined lanes and costumed performers turn the clock back a few hundred years, cameras optional.

Stepping into the set

The open air streets are built like a working film backlot, and the fun lies in what happens along them: ninja and samurai style performances, trick houses and interactive experiences, and the chance to dress in period costume and wander the lanes looking the part. Shows rotate through the day, so grab a schedule when you arrive and plan around the performances. It is a paradise for kids and for anyone who grew up on samurai films.

Making a half day of it

Two to four hours covers it comfortably, depending on how many shows and experiences you take in. The Arashiyama bamboo grove and temples are only a short ride further west, so many visitors pair the two for a full day away from the crowded eastern hills of Kyoto. Note that some experiences inside carry separate fees, so check what your ticket covers.

Getting there

The Uzumasa studio district is easy to reach on the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station, alighting at Uzumasa or Hanazono, or aboard the charming Randen tram from Shijo-Omiya toward Arashiyama. Local signage points the way from the stations.
