Adventure World in Shirahama is three parks rolled into one on the resort coast of Wakayama: a safari park you cross by train, on foot or by bicycle, a marine park with a serious performance program, and an amusement park to round out the day. Its scale and setting above the Pacific have made it one of western Japan’s favourite family destinations for decades.
The safari zone is the heart of the park, where a free touring train loops through herbivore and carnivore areas, and walking and cycling routes let you linger with giraffes, rhinos and friends at your own pace. The marine side answers with a dolphin and whale performance in a large ocean side stadium, penguin colonies and animal encounters through the day. Add a ferris wheel and rides, and the park comfortably swallows a full day, with the animal feeding experiences worth booking early on arrival.
Shirahama itself is one of Kansai’s great seaside escapes, with white sand, celebrated onsen and coastal scenery, so the park works best inside an overnight stay rather than a rushed return trip. Families often give the park one full day and the beaches another.
Ride the JR Kuroshio limited express from Shin-Osaka or Tennoji to Shirahama Station, around two and a half hours, then a short bus or taxi ride brings you to the gates. Direct flights also link Tokyo Haneda with nearby Nanki-Shirahama Airport for those coming from the east.
