Akiyoshido is Japan’s grandest limestone cave, a river carved cathedral running beneath the Akiyoshidai karst plateau in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The public route follows an underground river through chambers up to dozens of metres high, past terraced pools and columns on a scale no other Japanese cave approaches, and the cool of the passage holds steady whatever the season above.

Underground highlights

The walk’s signature sight is the Hyakumaizara, five hundred plates of rimstone pools descending like a ceremonial staircase, followed by the great gold column and chamber after chamber of massed formations. Paths are broad and well lit, built for ordinary shoes rather than caving gear, and the full course covers about a kilometre each way with optional adventure detours for the curious. The cave mouth itself, a huge cleft pouring spring water into a blue pool, is worth the trip alone.

The karst above

Emerging by the elevator entrance puts you on Akiyoshidai, a rolling upland studded with white limestone pinnacles, Japan’s largest karst landscape, with lookouts and walking trails across the grassland. Cave and plateau together fill a half day and pair well with Yamaguchi city’s temples or the coastal sights of Hagi.

Getting there

Buses run to Akiyoshido from Shin-Yamaguchi Station, a San’yo Shinkansen stop, in around 40 to 50 minutes, with services also from Yamaguchi city. The bus terminal stands a short walk from the cave entrance arcade.

Frequently asked questions
