The Akame valley in Mie Prefecture strings dozens of waterfalls along a mossy mountain gorge, and legend holds that ninja of the nearby Iga region once trained here among the rocks and spray. Today you can do both things the valley is known for: hike the falls, and pull on ninja gear to train the old fashioned way.
The trail follows the river past a procession of falls, each with its own name and character, from broad curtains of water to slender ribbons dropping through ferns. The full return walk takes a few hours at an easy pace, but shorter turnaround points mean you can tailor it to your group. Autumn colour season is spectacular here, and summer brings deep green shade and cool river air that makes the gorge a natural escape from the heat.
The ninja experience swaps hiking boots for a costume and puts you through drills drawn from the region’s Iga heritage: moving quietly, climbing, and throwing shuriken at targets. It is pitched as serious fun rather than theatre, set against the same cliffs the old stories describe, and children in particular tend to talk about it for the rest of the trip.
Take the Kintetsu Osaka Line to Akameguchi Station, reachable from Osaka’s Tsuruhashi Station in roughly an hour with a change along the way, then a short bus or taxi ride to the valley entrance. Coming from Nagoya, connect through Nabari.
