Shibamasa World is Fukui’s big family playground: an amusement park on the coast near Mikuni that packs in classic rides, one of Japan’s larger water park zones in summer, and enough indoor attractions to survive Hokuriku weather. It is the kind of generous, unpretentious park regional Japan does best.

Rides, water and dinosaurs

The dry side runs from ferris wheel and go karts to family coasters and a much loved wooden playground complex, while summer opens the sprawling pools, slides and lazy river that make the park a north coast institution in the school holidays. Fukui is Japan’s dinosaur prefecture, home of the famous excavations, and the park leans in with dinosaur themed attractions that bridge a visit here with the region’s great fossil museum inland.

Planning tips

Pool season is high summer only, so check operating calendars if slides are the mission; spring and autumn favour the rides and playgrounds with smaller crowds. The Tojinbo basalt cliffs, the coast’s most dramatic sight, are close by and pair naturally with a park day.

Getting there

Fukui is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen; from Fukui Station, the Echizen Railway runs toward Mikuni on the coast, with buses and taxis covering the last stretch to the park. Drivers can exit the Hokuriku expressway and follow coastal signage; parking is ample.
