Mother Farm spreads across the green hills of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba, close enough to Tokyo for a day trip yet a world away from the city. It is a working farm turned family attraction, where sheep graze on hillsides overlooking Tokyo Bay and the entertainment runs from shearing shows to strawberry picking depending on the season.

Farm life, Japanese style

The famous sheep shows are the heart of the visit, with shearing demonstrations and a parade of different breeds performed with showmanship you would not expect from agriculture. Beyond the sheep there are animal feeding and petting areas, tractor style tours of the grounds, and seasonal fruit and vegetable picking that changes through the year. Families with young children get the most from it, but the scenery alone rewards anyone wanting an easy green day out of Tokyo. Wear comfortable shoes, because the site is genuinely hilly and distances between areas are longer than they look on the map. Most visitors stay four to five hours.

Getting there

Take the JR Uchibo Line from Tokyo to Kimitsu, then a direct bus to the farm. Highway buses from Tokyo Station toward the Boso Peninsula also connect via a bus stop with shuttle access in season. Driving takes around ninety minutes from central Tokyo via the Aqua Line, and the bay crossing is part of the fun.
