The Railway Museum in Saitama is the grandest shrine to trains in a country that worships them. Run by the JR East foundation on the site of old rail yards near Omiya, it houses dozens of real locomotives and carriages spanning the whole history of Japanese rail, from steam engines to early shinkansen, displayed in a vast hall built around a working turntable.

Highlights for rail fans and families

The rolling stock hall is the showstopper, where you can board vintage carriages, walk beneath locomotives and watch the turntable demonstration complete with steam whistle. Around it are floors devoted to how railways work, science and job experience zones, and the driving simulators that draw the longest queues, including shinkansen simulators that feel remarkably real. Outside, mini trains that children can drive loop a small track. Train fans should allow a full day, and even lukewarm visitors find three hours vanish.

Getting there

Take the JR line from Tokyo to Omiya, about thirty minutes from Tokyo or Ueno Station, then transfer to the New Shuttle one stop to Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan Station, which delivers you to the museum’s front door. The route itself, ending on a rubber tyred people mover, feels appropriately on theme.

Frequently asked questions

Do the simulators cost extra? Some experiences inside use a lottery or reservation system and can carry separate fees, so check the arrangements on arrival.

Is it good for young kids? Excellent. Between the mini trains, play zones and sheer scale of the machines, it is one of the Kanto region’s best family museums.

Is English signage provided? Key exhibits carry English explanations, and the trains largely speak for themselves.
