In the forested hills above Lake Sagami, an hour west of central Tokyo, the Sagamiko resort park known as MORIMORI spreads rides, treetop adventures and one of the Kanto region’s biggest winter illumination displays across a mountainside. It is where Tokyo families go for outdoor fun with a view, part amusement park, part activity forest, with an onsen at the bottom of the hill for afterwards.

Daytime on the mountain

The park mixes conventional rides and go karts with the muscular stuff: high ropes courses through the trees, a long mountainside chairlift, and obstacle challenges that have featured in Japanese TV endurance shows. Children get their own scaled zones, and the Paddington themed campground alongside adds an overnight option in tents and cabins. Views open across the lake to the ridges of Okutama and, on clear days, Mt Fuji.

The illumination season

From late autumn into spring, millions of lights transform the slopes after dark into the Illumillion, with tunnels, lightscapes and the lift running as a night ride above the glow. It ranks among the largest illumination events near Tokyo and turns a summer day park into a winter evening destination.

Getting there

Take the JR Chuo Line to Sagamiko Station, about 60 minutes from Shinjuku with a change at Takao, then a short bus or taxi ride to the gates. Drivers use the Sagamiko interchange on the Chuo Expressway.
