Sawara grew rich shipping rice and soy sauce to Edo along its canal, and its merchant quarter still lines that waterway with black timber storehouses, sake breweries and willow fringed banks. Locals call it Little Edo, and the best way to see it is from the water, drifting under low bridges on a small tour boat while a boatman points out buildings that have traded continuously for centuries.

The boat experience

Tours glide the historic stretch of the Ono River through the preserved district, passing the house of Ino Tadataka, the surveyor who walked all Japan to draw its first accurate maps, and the Jaja bridge, which spills water into the canal on a timed spout. The pace is unhurried and the commentary warm, and winter sailings often add kotatsu blankets aboard. It is a gentler, far less crowded cousin of the famous canal towns.

Around the old town

Streets on both banks reward slow wandering, with sake tastings, eel restaurants and merchant houses open to visitors. Sawara’s grand float festivals in July and October, inscribed by UNESCO among Japan’s festival traditions, transform the town if your dates align. Katori Jingu, one of the Kanto region’s most venerable shrines, stands in forest a short ride away.

Getting there

Take the JR Narita Line from Narita to Sawara, about 30 minutes, with the historic district ten minutes on foot from the station. From Tokyo, allow around two hours via Narita, or use highway buses from Tokyo Station toward Katori.
