Tobu Zoo, northeast of Tokyo in Saitama, calls itself a hybrid leisure land because it welds a full zoo to an amusement park on a single site. That combination makes it a clever choice for families whose members cannot agree: white tigers and penguins on one side of the park, roller coasters and a Ferris wheel on the other, with no need to choose.

Animals and rides

The zoo side keeps a broad collection with its celebrated white tigers as the headliners, alongside lions, monkeys and a strong small animal and contact corner for young children. On the rides side, the wooden coaster Regina is the enthusiast draw, a rarity in Japan, backed by water rides, family coasters and a gentle kiddie zone. In summer a large pool complex opens, and winter brings one of the Kanto region’s better known illumination displays.

Pacing your day

The site is long and narrow, with the zoo and ride areas at opposite ends, so plan a rough loop rather than doubling back. Weekdays are wonderfully quiet. Entry only tickets suit zoo focused visits, while ride passes make sense if the coasters are the mission.

Getting there

Take the Tobu Skytree Line from Asakusa toward Tobu-Dobutsu-Koen Station, about an hour with a possible change at Kasukabe, then walk ten minutes to the gate. Through services from the Tokyo Metro Hibiya and Hanzomon lines also reach the station, which is handy from central Tokyo.

Frequently asked questions

Zoo or rides first? Animals in the morning while they are active, rides after, is the usual advice.

Is one day enough? Yes, a full day covers both halves comfortably.
