Chiikawa began as a web comic by the illustrator Nagano and grew into one of Japan’s biggest character crazes, so an entire park devoted to it was only a matter of time. Tokyo Chiikawa Park brings the small, anxious and utterly loveable trio of Chiikawa, Hachiware and Usagi to life inside the Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro, and fans travel from across the country to see it.
This is a compact indoor theme park rather than a sprawling one, built around walkthrough recreations of scenes from the series, interactive moments and photo spots at every turn. The detail is the drawcard. Fans will recognise settings and in jokes immediately, while newcomers can simply enjoy one of the most relentlessly cute environments in Tokyo. Park exclusive merchandise and themed food round out the visit, and for collectors the shop alone justifies the trip.
Sunshine City sits about ten minutes on foot from the east exit of Ikebukuro Station, which is served by the JR Yamanote Line and several Tokyo Metro lines. Follow Sunshine 60 Street through the shopping crowds and the signs will guide you in. Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Yurakucho Line is slightly closer if you are coming by subway.
Do I need to know Chiikawa first? It helps with the references, but the cuteness needs no translation, and plenty of visitors arrive as newcomers and leave as fans.
Should I book in advance? Yes. Entry runs on timed sessions and popular dates disappear early, especially weekends and school holidays.
Is it suitable for small children? Very. Everything is gentle and fully indoors.
