Tokyo Disney Resort is two parks side by side on Tokyo Bay: Tokyo Disneyland, the classic castle park and the first Disney park ever built outside the United States, and Tokyo DisneySea, a nautical exploration park that exists nowhere else on earth. Between them they draw more visitors than almost any theme parks in the world, and for plenty of Australian families they are the single biggest day of the whole Japan trip.

Disneyland or DisneySea?

Here is the catch that surprises first timers: there is no park hopper. Each ticket covers one park for one day, so you choose. Disneyland is the safer pick with younger kids and anyone who wants the classic castle, parades and familiar rides done to a polish you will not see anywhere else. DisneySea is the one you cannot do at home. Its harbours and canals are genuinely beautiful, the theming is a step beyond, and since 2024 it has Fantasy Springs, a huge new land with Frozen, Tangled and Peter Pan areas that has been packing the park out ever since. If you can spare two days, do both.

Tickets and prices

Tokyo Disney uses date based pricing, so a one day adult passport floats roughly between 7,900 and 10,900 yen depending on demand, with a handful of peak dates pushing higher. Juniors and children pay less, and kids three and under are free. Getting there by train

This is one of the easiest theme park runs in Japan. From Tokyo Station, the JR Keiyo Line reaches Maihama Station in about 15 minutes, and the resort gate is a short walk from the exit. If you are staying on the west side around Shinjuku or Shibuya, allow 45 minutes to an hour door to door. The parks open early and the trains start earlier, so an 8am start is very doable. Maihama is covered by the JR Pass and by ordinary Suica fares, so getting there costs next to nothing.

Tips worth knowing

• Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before official opening. The gates often open early and the first hour is worth three afternoon hours.
• Download the official Tokyo Disney Resort app before you go. Ride queues, showtimes and mobile food ordering all live in it.
• Premier Access, the paid skip the line system, is bought per ride in the app on the day. For Fantasy Springs rides it can be the difference between riding and missing out.
• Weekdays outside Japanese holidays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
• Food inside is good and reasonably priced by Australian standards. The themed snacks are half the fun.
