Tokyo does playful better than almost anywhere, and the Unko Museum might be its silliest success story. Unko is the Japanese word for poop, and this attraction turns the subject into a pastel wonderland of games, photo spots and giggles. It is not remotely educational and it never pretends to be. The whole point is colour, comedy and the odd joy of a rude word being given its own museum.

What happens inside

Expect a run of themed zones rather than exhibits in any traditional sense. There are walls of rainbow coloured poo emoji, quickfire games where you compete against other visitors, a volcano moment the staff build up with genuine theatre, and endless backdrops designed for phone cameras. Visitors receive a small souvenir near the entrance, and the gift shop at the end is arguably an attraction in its own right, stocked with merchandise you will not find anywhere else.

Who will enjoy it

Kids find it hilarious for obvious reasons, and the humour stays cute rather than crude, so parents can relax. It also works well for groups of adults after an hour of pure nonsense between shopping and dinner. Most people spend around an hour inside. If you are travelling with teenagers who have outgrown aquariums and temples, this is the rare stop that wins them back. The museum has shifted venues over the years, so confirm the current location on the booking page before you set out.

Frequently asked questions

Is it actually gross? Not at all. Everything is cartoonish, colourful and closer to a lolly shop than a toilet.

Do I need to book ahead? Entry is managed in sessions and weekends fill quickly, so booking a day or two out is sensible.

Is there much English? The games are visual and simple, and staff are used to overseas visitors, so language is no barrier.
