Tokyo to Mt Fuji by Train

Most people who say they are going to Mt Fuji mean the Fuji Five Lakes area on its northern side, centred on Kawaguchiko, where you get the classic views of the mountain across the water and from the Chureito Pagoda. The Fuji Excursion runs there direct from Shinjuku, and it is the simplest way to do a day trip without changing trains.

Tips for the journey

Book the seat early, both ways

With only four trains a day and every seat reserved, the Fuji Excursion sells out at weekends and in cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons. Book the return at the same time.

Go in the morning for the view

Mt Fuji is often hidden by cloud, especially in summer. Mornings and the cooler months give the best chance of a clear view.

Chureito Pagoda is on the way

The pagoda with the famous view of Fuji is a short walk and a long staircase from Shimoyoshida Station on the Fujikyu line, a few stops before Kawaguchiko.

On a JR Pass, budget for the last leg

Your pass covers Shinjuku to Otsuki. Have cash or an IC card ready for the Fujikyu section, which is a separate railway.
