Beppu Tower has watched over Japan’s hot spring capital since 1957, an elegant steel lattice from the same golden age of tower building that produced Tokyo Tower and Osaka’s Tsutenkaku, and from the same celebrated structural engineer. Its observation deck lifts you above the steaming city for a view that explains Beppu at a glance: plumes rising from a thousand onsen vents between the mountains and the bay.

The view and the vibe

From the deck the panorama sweeps from Beppu Bay around to the hillside districts of Kannawa and beyond, where the city’s famous hells bubble away. Sunset and evening visits show the city lighting up beneath its perpetual steam, and the tower itself glows as a retro landmark on the seafront. Lower floors carry displays on the tower’s history and the postwar boom that built it, plus a cafe bar with the same view at a slower pace.

A retro icon

Beppu Tower is less about scale than character; it is a listed piece of showa era heritage and proud of it. Pair a visit with a stroll along the nearby beachfront and an evening soak at Takegawara Onsen, the city’s magnificent nineteenth century bathhouse, for the full retro Beppu experience.

Getting there

The tower stands near the seafront about ten minutes on foot from JR Beppu Station’s east exit. Beppu is served by Sonic limited expresses from Hakata in around two hours and from Oita in ten minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a visit take? Half an hour to an hour, ideal between baths.

Is it worth it versus the hells? They complement each other; the tower shows you the whole steaming city at once.
