Kamado Jigoku, the Cooking Pot Hell, is one of the famous jigoku of Beppu, the volcanic hot spring city on Kyushu’s east coast where superheated water erupts from the earth in colours no onsen town should rightly have. Guarded by a grinning demon statue atop a giant pot, this particular hell gathers several ponds in one compact site, which makes it the best single stop if your time in the Kannawa district is short.

What you will see

The grounds hold six numbered ponds ranging from clear cobalt blue to rusty orange, all steaming furiously, along with mud pools that blurp away like slow porridge. Staff demonstrate how the vents respond to smoke, a small piece of theatre that delights kids. Being a working piece of volcanic ground, everything is fenced and pathed, and the site includes foot baths fed by the springs.

Eat the volcano

Beppu cooks with its steam, and Kamado Jigoku leans into it. Stalls sell eggs boiled in the springs, steamed puddings and corn, and you can sip the mineral water from one fountain. Combined tickets covering all seven hells of the Beppu circuit are sold if you plan to walk the full route through Kannawa.

Getting there

From JR Beppu Station, buses toward Kannawa run frequently and take about 20 minutes; alight at Kannawa and walk a few minutes uphill. Beppu connects to Hakata in Fukuoka by the Sonic limited express, roughly two hours, making a long day trip feasible, though an overnight in Beppu suits the town’s bathing culture far better.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bathe in the hells? No, they are far too hot; they are for viewing, though foot baths are provided.

How long does a visit take? Around 30 to 45 minutes for this hell alone, half a day for the full circuit.
