Umitamago sits right on the shore of Beppu Bay between Oita and Beppu, and its name means sea egg, which suits its rounded, friendly architecture. It is Kyushu’s most playful aquarium, built around the idea of getting hands close to sea life, with touch pools and animal performances woven through a collection drawn largely from the surrounding bay and the seas of southern Japan.
The big central tank swirls with the fish of the local coast, while walruses, seals, dolphins and otters carry the performance schedule with more humour than most marine parks manage. Touch zones let children handle rays and other robust sea creatures under supervision, and outdoor areas open onto views straight across the water. It is midsized, warm hearted and very much pitched at families rather than crowds chasing spectacle.
Directly across the road rises Takasakiyama, a mountain famous for its troop of wild Japanese macaques, where monkeys amble past visitors on their way to the feeding grounds. The aquarium and monkey mountain share a footbridge and combine into one of Oita’s best half days, especially with kids who need variety.
Buses between Oita Station and Beppu Station stop directly outside at the Takasakiyama entrance, roughly fifteen minutes from either end. Drivers will find it just off the coastal Route 10 with parking on site. It is an easy add on to a Beppu onsen stay.
