Ishigaki Yaima Village gathers old red tiled houses from around the Yaeyama Islands onto a hillside above Nagura Bay, preserving the look and rhythm of island life as it was before concrete and resorts. It is Ishigaki’s open air museum, small and unhurried, with shisa lion statues on every roofline and sanshin music drifting between the houses.

Island culture, hands on

The relocated homes, some more than a century old, are open to wander, each themed to a different corner of Yaeyama culture, with craft experiences like weaving and shisa painting on offer through the day. Performances of island song and dance run to a regular schedule, and the bay views from the upper grounds are worth the visit alone. The resident troop of squirrel monkeys in their walk through enclosure reliably steals the show for younger visitors, with mangrove boardwalks below adding a short nature walk.

Fitting it into an Ishigaki stay

The village sits on the way to the Kabira Bay lookout, Ishigaki’s most famous view, so the two combine into a natural half day loop around the island’s northwest. Ninety minutes covers the village at a relaxed pace, longer with a craft session.

Getting there

The village is about twenty five minutes by car or taxi from central Ishigaki along the coast road toward Kabira, and route buses between the town bus terminal and Kabira Bay stop nearby. Most visitors fold it into a hire car day around the island.
