Kouri Ocean Tower stands on a hilltop on Kouri Island in northern Okinawa, looking back across some of the clearest water in Japan toward the long, low sweep of the Kouri Bridge. The bridge drive is already one of Okinawa’s favourite road trip moments, and the tower is the natural place to stop, climb and take it all in properly.

The ride up and the view

Visits begin with a ride in an automated cart that climbs slowly through gardens to the tower itself, a small theatrical touch that kids enjoy. Inside are viewing floors and an open deck at the top, where the panorama takes in the bridge, the reef shallows in bands of turquoise, and the East China Sea beyond. There is also a shell museum on the way through and a cafe and shop for unhurried visits.

Making it part of a northern Okinawa day

Kouri Island pairs naturally with the Churaumi Aquarium area, Nakijin Castle ruins and the beaches of the Motobu Peninsula, all within easy driving distance. Many visitors simply cross the bridge, circle the small island, stop for the view and an ice cream, and carry on. The tower turns that quick loop into a proper memory, especially in clear weather.

Getting there

A hire car is essentially the only practical option. From Naha allow around two hours north via the expressway, crossing to Kouri Island over the Warumi and Kouri bridges. Parking at the tower is straightforward.
