Murasaki Mura recreates the Okinawa of the old Ryukyu Kingdom, with red tiled houses, stone walls and lanes that feel lifted from another century. The site began life as a television drama set and has grown into one of the island’s best places to try traditional crafts with your own hands rather than just looking at them behind glass.

Hands on Ryukyu culture

The park is really a village of workshops. Depending on the day you can paint your own shisa lion guardian, try Ryukyu glass, weaving, candle making or local cooking, with dozens of experiences on offer and staff who are used to guiding first timers. Most sessions produce something you can take home, which beats another fridge magnet. Between workshops, the recreated streets are a relaxed place to wander and photograph, especially in the softer light of late afternoon.

Planning your visit

Allow a couple of hours, more if you plan to do several crafts. The park sits in Yomitan on Okinawa’s west coast, surrounded by resort beaches, so it pairs well with a swim or a sunset stop at nearby capes. Workshops can book out in school holidays, so reserve popular ones ahead.

Getting there

Okinawa has no rail network beyond the Naha monorail, so a rental car is the easiest option; the drive up from Naha takes around an hour. Route buses also run along the west coast from Naha toward Yomitan if you prefer to leave the driving to someone else.
