Neo Park Okinawa is a bird lover’s idea of a zoo. Set in subtropical gardens on the edge of Nago in northern Okinawa, it keeps much of its collection in huge walk through aviaries where flamingos, ibis and waterfowl wander the paths alongside you, begging shamelessly for the feed sold at the gate. The effect is closer to strolling a tropical wetland than visiting a conventional zoo.

Up close with the animals

The free roaming birds are the stars, and children in particular are delighted and occasionally ambushed by the bolder flamingos and peacocks. Beyond the aviaries live capybaras, tortoises and other animals from the tropics, many in contact areas where feeding and touching are allowed. A small sightseeing train loops the park’s perimeter for a relaxed overview of the grounds, a favourite with younger visitors.

Fitting it into a northern day

Neo Park sits minutes from the Nago Pineapple Park, and the two combine into an easy morning before continuing to the Churaumi Aquarium on the Motobu Peninsula. Allow ninety minutes to two hours, longer if your group settles in at the animal contact areas. Paths are unsealed in places, so prams cope but sturdy footwear helps.

Getting there

The park is on the hills behind Nago, a little over an hour from Naha by car via the Okinawa Expressway to its Kyoda exit. Like most northern Okinawa attractions it is overwhelmingly a driving destination, though taxis from central Nago take only a few minutes.
