Huis Ten Bosch is one of Japan’s strangest and most charming ideas: a full Dutch city built on Omura Bay near Nagasaki, with canals, windmills, tulip fields in season and Europe-scale architecture, all run as a resort park. At night it turns into the Kingdom of Lights, one of the biggest illumination displays on earth, and that alone justifies the trip for many visitors.

The 1-Day Passport

The standard buy is the 1DAY Passport, covering entry plus around 40 attractions, the in-park canal cruisers and buses, and the illumination. Passports are priced by age band, with cheaper twilight versions from mid-afternoon if you are mainly coming for the lights. Resort hotel guests pick up follow-on day discounts, which suits an overnight stay, and the park genuinely rewards staying for both the day and the night faces.

Getting there by train

Huis Ten Bosch has its own JR station, about 90 minutes from Hakata Station in Fukuoka on the Huis Ten Bosch limited express, covered by the JR Pass and the JR Kyushu passes. From Nagasaki it is around 90 minutes with a change at Isahaya. The station-to-gate walk is five minutes across the bridge.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough? A long day covers it. An overnight in a park hotel makes it luxurious and catches the illumination twice.

Best season? Tulips in spring, but the Kingdom of Lights runs most of the year and peaks in winter.

Worth it without kids? Yes. It skews at least as much to couples and photographers as to families.
