Beppu’s steaming, bubbling “hells” are famous across Japan, but most visitors photograph them without ever learning how they work. The Jigoku Onsen Museum fills that gap, telling the story of the town’s extraordinary geothermal plumbing in a modern, visual way that turns your walk around the hells from sightseeing into understanding.

What the museum covers

Exhibits trace the long underground journey of Beppu’s water, from rain falling on the surrounding mountains to the moment it erupts as boiling springs decades later. Immersive displays recreate that passage through rock and time, and the science is presented so clearly that children follow it as easily as adults. You will also pick up the human side: how generations of locals built livelihoods, cooking methods and a whole tourism culture on top of a landscape that steams year round.

Pair it with the hells

The museum sits in the Kannawa district among the hells themselves, so the natural plan is to visit before or after touring them. Seeing Umi Jigoku’s cobalt pond after learning what makes it blue is a genuinely different experience. Allow around an hour inside.

Getting there

From JR Beppu Station, buses run frequently up to the Kannawa area in about twenty minutes; the museum and the main cluster of hells are walkable from the bus stops. Beppu itself is on the JR Nippo Line, with limited express services from Hakata via Oita.
