Mojiko boomed a century ago as the port where Japan met the continent, and its banks, customs houses and shipping offices survive as the Mojiko Retro district, one of Kyushu’s most atmospheric corners. The observation room crowns the district’s modern high rise, and from the 31st floor the whole drama of the Kanmon Strait unrolls below: ships threading between Honshu and Kyushu, the suspension bridge striding across, and the brick era rooftops at your feet.

The view

The strait is a working waterway, so the view is never static; freighters and ferries slide through constantly, with Shimonoseki piled up on the far shore. Late afternoon into evening is the connoisseur’s window, when the harbour lights come on and the retro district below glows. It is a compact attraction, a lift ride and a long linger, which suits Mojiko’s strolling pace perfectly.

Getting there

Trains on the JR Kagoshima Line run from Kokura, the shinkansen hub, to Mojiko Station in about 15 minutes, terminating at a gorgeously restored period station building that starts the retro experience before you have left the platform. The observation tower and the whole district are then an easy waterfront walk. With more time, the pedestrian tunnel under the strait or a quick ferry hop across to Shimonoseki extends the outing to two prefectures in an afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a visit take? Half an hour up the tower, but Mojiko Retro as a whole merits half a day.

What should I eat? Mojiko claims the invention of yaki curry, baked curry with cheese, and the district is full of it.
