Sengan-en is the garden estate of the Shimadzu family, the lords who ruled southern Kyushu for seven centuries, and it enjoys one of the great pieces of landscape borrowing in Japan: its garden uses the smoking volcano Sakurajima, across the bay, as its centrepiece. House, garden, bay and volcano line up in a single view that has been stopping visitors in their tracks since 1658.

The garden and the house

Paths wind through the strolling garden past ponds, shrines, stone lanterns and bamboo groves, always returning to that framed view of the volcano. The residence at its heart can be visited to see how one of Japan’s most powerful families lived, while around the grounds sit relics of their startling industrial experiments, part of a nineteenth century complex recognised by UNESCO for its role in Japan’s modernisation. Craft shops on site continue the region’s famous glass cutting tradition, and restaurants serve local dishes with bay views.

Timing your visit

Allow two hours or more, and check the day’s volcanic mood: Sakurajima puffing ash into a blue sky is the photograph everyone hopes for. Morning light favours the view across the water.

Getting there

Sengan-en lies along the coast north of central Kagoshima. The Kagoshima City View sightseeing bus runs there directly from Kagoshima-Chuo Station in about forty minutes, and regular city buses also serve the gate. Taxis from the centre take around fifteen minutes.
