Hakone Ropeway Tickets

The Hakone Ropeway strings a line of gondolas across the volcanic heart of Hakone, linking Sounzan with Togendai on the shore of Lake Ashi. In clear weather it delivers the region’s signature view, Mt Fuji rising beyond the lake, and midway it crosses directly above Owakudani, a steaming volcanic valley streaked yellow with sulphur. Few cable rides anywhere pack this much drama into half an hour.

Riding the route

Gondolas depart continuously, so there are no timed departures to chase. From Sounzan the line climbs over a ridge before the ground suddenly falls away into Owakudani’s hissing vents, a genuine jolt the first time. Most travellers hop off at Owakudani station to walk the viewpoints and try a kuro-tamago, an egg boiled black in the volcanic springs, before continuing down to Togendai for the sightseeing boats across Lake Ashi.

One way or round trip

Because the ropeway forms one segment of the classic Hakone loop, most people ride it one way as part of a circuit taking in the Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway and pirate ship cruise. A round trip ticket suits those basing at one end. Note that volcanic gas levels occasionally suspend services or close sections, and buses substitute when that happens.

Getting there

From Hakone-Yumoto, ride the Hakone Tozan Railway to Gora, transfer to the Sounzan cable car to its upper terminus, and the ropeway station is directly connected. Odakyu services from Shinjuku reach Hakone-Yumoto, with the Romancecar running through direct.
